The Fandom Minecraft Wiki (formerly known as Minepedia[1]) is a Fandom (originally Gamepedia) wiki about the video game Minecraft.
History[]
The wiki was founded by a British student named citricsquid in July 16, 2009 who also created the Minecraft Forum. The original name of the wiki was Minepedia[1] and minecraftwiki.net was the original wiki's URL.
The forum and the wiki were shut down in August 2009 because citricsquid didn't have enough money to continue hosting. However, thanks to the user aera helped paying the cost of hosting, both of them went online in August 28, 2009. Since then, the wiki rapidly grew in popularity.
A new hosting plan was discussed after a backup failure occurred in August 19, 2010 which caused edits to be lost.[2] And although the user WedTM provided some hardware, issues still happened as the wiki grew too fast. This led to the wiki adding donations and ads and the company Redstone Wire Ltd was founded to maintain the wiki as well as the Minecraft Forum. But even after those additions, the wiki still had performance issues.
Around that time, the wiki-hosting company Curse Media contacted citricsquid and his team. They wanted to acquire the company that maintained the wiki a.k.a Redstone Wire Ltd, and citricsquid's team accepted it. So Curse now had owned the wiki since November 15, 2010. And then December 2010, Minepedia changed its name to Minecraft Wiki.[3]
An agreement between Curse and Mojang, the game's developer, was signed in 2011.[4] The agreement made the wiki offical.
In December 2012, Curse launched Gamepedia, but the wiki didn't move to it until August 2013 with the new URL minecraft.gamepedia.com.[5] And later on in September 24, 2013, the wiki's logo was changed.[6]
In August 26, 2016, Amazon bought Curse through its subsidiary "Twitch Interactive",[7] new forms of ads was later on introduced. In November 24, 2017, Minecraft Wiki was moved to Amazon Web Services. But this did not last long as in December 12, 2018, Fandom annouced their acquisition of Gamepedia,[8] which made the wiki now hosted under Fandom and the URL was changed to minecraft.fandom.com.
The original Fandom Minecraft Wiki was closed and merged to the Gamepedia-to-Fandom Minecraft Wiki after discussions from a Discord server created in December 17, 2019. That original wiki was later on archived in March 9, 2021.
In October 2021, Microsoft terminated the agreement Curse signed to Mojang in 2011.[9] After that, the wiki not only was and still is no longer considered official, but also the wiki's logo had to be changed again.
In January 24, 2023, anonymous editing was disabled to the wiki by Fandom in order to comply with COPPA.[10] And even though vandalism was reduced, so did the wiki's activity.
In September 24, 2023, the wiki had been migrated to Weird Gloop (the company that helped the migration of RuneScape Wiki) after several discussions.[11][12] But the Fandom wiki was and still is remained open for users to read and edit as Fandom intended, and the Weird Gloop Minecraft Wiki's URL is barred on Fandom because of Fandom's forking policy. Later in November 2023, a global Fandom filter was set up to disallow edits with the forking wiki's URLs, which includes the URL of the Weird Gloop Minecraft Wiki.
